FAQ – Are there different types of meditation?

In a word, yes.

In more words, there are two types. The first is insight meditation: basically, you show up and sit, you do not speak, and you sit in stillness and silence. This can be done alone or with others, but either way insight meditation is designed to allow you insight into yourself, your behaviors, your general existence, and everything you’ve ever wondered about your life. (Yikes. But, you know, also pretty damn cool.) Insight meditation is a lengthily and dedicated process—it can take years to develop.

The second type of meditation is focused meditation: this includes guided imagery, mantras, music, chanting—basically anything that helps to focus your mind. By centering your mind on a meditation practice—instead of the 10,000 things on your to-do list—you are training your brain how to focus. Most people start with this kind of meditation.

One of the things you can expect when you arrive at Mindfulness Bar is a variety of meditation services—all levels, all styles, all experiences. And—curveball!—we’re not going to actually organize these into any sort of hierarchy or schedule. We just want you to show up. We hold space for beginners and advanced practitioners, alike—just show up and TRY IT ALL. There are no rules to meditating. (Well, you DO have to show up. So, okay, there’s one rule. But that is it.)
